Mechanical Engineer
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is located in the San Francisco Bay Area on a 200-acre site in the hills above the University of California's Berkeley campus and is managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy. A leader in science and engineering research for 75 years, Berkeley Lab is the oldest of the U.S. Department of Energy's national laboratories.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Engineering Division of Berkeley Lab is looking for a highly capable mechanical engineer with a desire to work in an applied R&D National Laboratory environment, using a broad array of analytical, design, instrumentation, and/or hardware skills in the development of research equipment of national importance within the Department of Energy complex. Positions provide an opportunity for exposure to a wide variety of R&D programs and projects.
NOTE: Two-year term appointment with possible renewal and/or conversion to a career appointment, contingent upon satisfactory performance, continued availability of work, and funding.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Design, analyze, and follow fabrication of scientific experimental equipment for government-sponsored national research programs and facilities. • Utilize analytic and empirical tools and methodologies to explore and validate cost effective and timely solutions for complex and often technically challenging projects. • Lead and participate in development of project scope, requirements, cost and schedule. • Provide engineering direction and judgment for developmental work, with due consideration for scientific and practical concerns. • Be responsible for technical efforts to meet project deliverables. • Will generally serve as Lead Engineer on a project/program. • Will generally supervise other engineers and designers. • May represent the Laboratory to the outside world in a specific specialty through participation in design reviews.
